When a voice on a Teams call turns metallic, stutters, or drops syllables, the microphone is almost never at fault. That sound is what audio becomes when pieces of it fail to arrive on time. Voice travels across the internet as a stream of small packets, and Teams has to play them in order, immediately, with no chance to wait for stragglers. When packets go missing or turn up late, the software fills the gaps with guesses, and those guesses are the robot you hear.
So the repair work belongs on the connection, not in the audio settings.
Work out whose connection is struggling
Before changing anything, decide where the problem sits. The logic is simple. If one person sounds choppy to everyone, that person’s upload is in trouble. If everyone sounds choppy to you and fine to each other, your download is the weak link. If colleagues say you are breaking up while they sound perfect to you, your upload is failing, which is easy to miss because nothing seems wrong from your seat.
Teams will help with the evidence. During a meeting, the More menu includes a call health view that reports on network conditions, including measures such as packet loss, jitter and round-trip time. You do not have to interpret every figure. If the panel flags the network as poor while the audio is misbehaving, you have your answer. Teams also tends to display a banner warning about poor network quality, which people habitually dismiss and should not.
Why Wi-Fi is the usual suspect
Home and office wireless networks are shared, variable and prone to interference. A speed test may report an impressive number, but voice does not need speed. It needs consistency. A connection that is fast on average yet stalls for a fraction of a second every so often will handle video streaming perfectly well, because streaming buffers ahead. A live call cannot buffer, so every stall is audible.
The typical culprits are distance from the router, walls and floors between you and it, a crowded wireless band in an apartment building, and other devices in the house competing for airtime.
An Ethernet cable cures most of this in one step. If running a cable is not realistic, move closer to the router, choose the 5 GHz network if your router shows it separately, and think about a mesh system if your usual desk is simply in a bad spot.
What else competes with your call
The connection can be fine and still get crowded. Cloud backup clients, large file syncs, operating system updates and someone else’s game download all claim bandwidth, and uploads are especially disruptive because most home connections have far less upload capacity than download. Pausing sync clients before an important meeting is a good habit.
VPNs are another common factor. Routing a call through a corporate VPN adds distance and an extra bottleneck. Many organizations set up their VPN so that Teams traffic bypasses it, but not all do. If calls are clean with the VPN off and choppy with it on, pass that observation to your IT team instead of working around it on your own.
Your computer can be the bottleneck too. When the processor is saturated, by dozens of browser tabs, a heavy spreadsheet, or video effects such as background blur, audio processing falls behind and the symptoms sound much like packet loss. Closing unneeded applications and switching off video effects takes a minute and is worth trying. A longer list of checks for robotic or choppy voice in Teams helps when the obvious culprits have already been ruled out.
Bluetooth adds a wireless hop of its own. A headset on a weak Bluetooth link can produce stutter that has nothing to do with the internet. If the choppiness disappears when you switch to a wired headset or the laptop’s built-in audio, the headset connection was the cause.
Rescues for a call already in progress
Sometimes the meeting is underway and you need to be understood immediately. Turn off your own camera first, and turn off incoming video as well if your version offers that, since video takes far more bandwidth than voice. Stop screen sharing if someone else can take over. Ask other people in the household to pause streaming for half an hour.
If none of that is enough, change the path entirely. Join from the Teams mobile app over cellular data, or use the dial-in phone number if the invitation has one. A plain phone line is not glamorous, but it is steady, and a steady voice is more useful to the meeting than a good camera angle.
